In traditional Chaozhou (Teochew) opera, actors playing clownish roles often steal the limelight from the principal actors playing the more serious roles, as their appearance is guaranteed to bring delight and laughter.
But playing comical roles successfully is serious business, as in all forms of stage performances.
Li Yipeng (李义鵬) of the Guangdong Chaozhou Opera Academy (广东潮剧院) is one remarkable actor who has been entertaining audiences since he joined the academy in 1960.
In the opera "Jin Hua Nu", he plays the part of a kind-hearted county magistrate who seeks only simple contentment. In this scene, he is riding on a stubborn white pony making the rounds of the countryside with 2 assistants who are too hungry to shout out loud to clear the way for him.
