My impressions of the Silk Road were gleaned from the pictures I saw when, as a boy, I stood by my father's desk and watched him draw one Chinese landscape painting after another, based on the sketches he made from his Silk Road tour. The myriad changes in the pictorial composition, the wielding of the brush and the ink tones left such fantastic imaginings within me that I left those were vast expanses of space filled with musical notes allowing me to roam free with my musical thoughts. In the course of time, I built my own musical Silk Road: The Song of Baliu, The Lift of the Ancient Roads, The Music of Liangzhou, The Dream of Loulan and The Dance of Qiuci. They made up my musical journey down the ancient Silk Road.

  • Wonderful piece! This video actually made me buy a Guanzi and start learning to play! The more traditional pieces are also very fascinating, but this is of course more accessible to the Westerner's ear not accustomed to Chinese music. However, I am working myself into a better understanding of the traditional style as well. Thank you for uploading!

  • wu lao shi, very sad he's gone. i rmb watching his solo once. totally mesmerised.

  • Musikverein (Goldener Saal), Vienna.

  • where was the concert held???

  • I especially like 1:31 - 1:59

  • Out of the song of baliu, the lift of the ancient roads and etc, which one was this?

  • naturally. Even orchestras composed entirely of chinese instruments are inherently based off of western models. In traditional Chinese music, there is no such thing as an "orchestra". Hell, the classical western orchestra itself is no more than 200 years old.
