The placent contains powerful hormones which enable the mother goat's uterus to contract powerfully and close off any bleeding she may have from the rupturing away of the placenta and many animal mothers partake of it. Just imagine if you had just given birth and had to flee a predator aroused by the scent of your birthing of a new life. The mother wouldn't have enough strength to run away much less fight for her life or her baby's.

The goat is not eating her own placenta. It is the placenta of the kid. Most mammals do this. Why let it go to waste?
