Because they (the "carabiniers du Prince") are officially in charge of the personal security of the Prince and its family. They are effectively protecting a person and are equipped accordingly.
As opposed to England, for example, where (correct me if I'm wrong) this kind of ceremony is purely symbolic (the army does protect the royal family).
They are very well trained. I like their movements and uniforms.

They carry M-16 rifles, how come they don't use a more older rifle like is usual for ceremonies?
