Played by Richard Chandler. J. S. Bach died nearly one hundred years before the saxophone was invented, but Bach's First Cello Suite, works very well for the baritone saxophone. It is played in its original key, thanks to the extra long bell on the baritone saxophone, which enables it to play the lowest note written in this suite, a concert C.
The challenge of playing string instrument music on woodwind instruments is in finding places to take breaths. For this reason, the phrasing of these Bach dances tends to have more rhythmic variation on saxophone than would be the case when played on cello.

  • Mr. Chandler...I like this attempt very much... seem to challenge the piece on its original terms as cello music... very interesting and intrepid approach because it makes the baritone subject to your will, as opposed to modifying the performance for whatever limitations the instruments is perceived to have... keep up the good work

  • @knellonetellone2 Thank you so very much for your comment! I just had a peg installed on my horn so I'm going to do my best to play even more 'cello like'. If you get a chance, please check out the courante and minuets on another youtube video. I hope to work on the prelude soon and also post that. Again, thank you!

  • Thank you so very much for your thoughtful and kind comment! I wish you the very best with your own work on baritone saxophone. If you get a chance, please check on some of my work on alto, as well.

  • ive never seen someone play the bari between their legs...its always off to the side. . . i dont even play with my tenor between my legs. mabey you sould try it off to the side and see how it feels...

  • @bdsaxophone Thanks for your comment. You are right.... the standard way is to play with the baritone off the the side. For me, the side position feels unnatural in the way that it might feel for a cello player to play off to the side. The center position truly feels best for me. One needs a support for the saxophone in addition to the neckstrap for it to feel the best. Please check out the other Bach Cello Suite video when you get a chance. All the best, Richard

  • very different from cello, unique though. it was enjoyable, not as clean as wanted but, its a saxophone playing a baroque solo, what do you expect? very good job. couple wrong notes here and there but, were all human right? i dont hear much dynamic contrast either but, i should be so picky... anyway in all it was unique.

  • @regaldrifter Thanks for listening and commenting. If you get a chance, please take a listen to the courante and minuet movements of this suite that are also on youtube.

  • i love this piece it was my audition music for my high school, i didn't play it on the Bari i played it on the bass clarinet. but sir, may i just say that you played it beautifully.

  • I truly appreciate what you've done here as well as in your other video. Kudos to you for putting the classical beauty into this wonderful instrument and demonstrating the qualities it has beyond Jazz music. Bravo!
