  • I'm white but I have lived in South Florida my whole life and the majority here is Hispanic. I have always been in the minority so I don't know what its like to be the majority. The word gaijin doesn't really bother me and if you think about it Japanese people can never be apart of the gaijin "club" now can they? Japan isn't like America. Its only to be expected that you can never truly be Japanese.

  • @schizophrenicpirate It's complicated - I did a long blog "it ain't easy being Japanese" once - basically, you can be Japanese to all your inner circle of family and friends, and if you try and really want it, even with coworkers and associates. Outside of that, with strangers, there are limits, but in Japan, even among Japanese, people don't really bother too much worrying about the other 120million, so long as everyone just follows the rules and doesn't make trouble.

    So you can be Japanese.

  • I am Jamaican, never been to Japan, but with the little knowledg I have of Japanese, I fing the word gaijin offensive, so I understand how many people feel, especially when someone is born in Japan - maybe Japanese mixed with something elso or just of foreign decent - and that person is still referred to as gaijin... that can be s hard to deal with, it is simply discrimination!

  • @rapjigga1 Well, there's two points to that - one, in Jamaica, do you not have terms to refer to different races, or foreigners? And do people not make those assessments superficially too? Add to that that less than 2% of the country is foreign nationality, less than 0.1% is racially non-Asian... You can't get angry at people for saying "hey, a gaijin". Other point is that most of the "discrimination" is positive - they treat you better for being thought of as a foreigner. Not always, but mostly

  • Before you continue to read this comment, please keep in mind that just because I disagree with something you say it doesn't mean I don't like you and it doesn't mean I don't respect your opinion. But there is enough Gaijin on Gaijin hate already. There is no Gaijin more uzai than one who compares herself/himself to and judges other gaijin. We are all foreigners and living in a foreign country is difficult (regardless of your reasons for coming). It may be cheesy but focus on your own life.

  • @IbarakiStyle I know, and you're right - Victor was just tired of being the bad guy all the time and wanted to get me to troll a bit. And don't worry, I THRIVE on criticism ;)

  • Gaijins hate other gaijins in Japan because many a gaijin think that it is his Japan, and he doesn't want to share it with rivals. Specifically, the want to horde the admiration from women, the favorable treatment, and unique experiences, the unique knowledge of the language and culture. That's why they get pissed off when they see other gaijin. And it's that fucking simple, but we can pretend it's tremendously complex.

  • @Hikosaemon I understand your point. In fact, I should have made my point more clear. I am aware of the fact that many Japanese do not use the term "gaijin" maliciously. Though there are still those who do. It is only when the term is used malicously that I take offence to it. In Jamaica, or any country, there will always be those who refer to foreigners in a good or bad manner, but when it is malicious, that it's a problem - though there is far less of this problem in Jamaica today.

Whoops, sorry. I missed the "s".. hehe. In this context it would be "old men."
