Dick Hallorann: Do you know how I knew your name was Doc? You know what I'm talking about, don't you? I can remember when I was a little boy. My grandmother and I could hold conversations entirely without ever opening our mouths. She called it "shining". And for a long time, I thought it was just the two of us that had the shine to us. Just like you probably thought you was the only one. But there are other folks, though mostly they don't know it, or don't believe it. How long have you been able to do it?... Why don't you want to talk about it?
Danny Torrance: I'm not supposed to.
Dick Hallorann: Who said you ain't supposed to?
Danny Torrance: Tony.
Dick Hallorann: Who's Tony?
Danny Torrance: Tony is a little boy that lives in my mouth.
Dick Hallorann: Is Tony the one that tells you things?
Danny Torrance: Yes.
Dick Hallorann: How does he tell you things?
Danny Torrance: It's like I go to sleep, and he shows me things. But when I wake up, I can't remember everything.
Dick Hallorann: Does your Mom and Dad know about Tony?
Danny Torrance: Yes.
Dick Hallorann: Do they know he tells you things?
Danny Torrance: No. Tony told me never to tell 'em.
Dick Hallorann: Has Tony ever told you anything about this place? About the Overlook Hotel?
Danny Torrance: I don't know.
Dick Hallorann: Now think real hard now. Think.
Danny Torrance: Maybe he showed me something.
Dick Hallorann: Try to think of what it was.
Danny Torrance: Mr. Hallorann, are you scared of this place?
Dick Hallorann: No. Scared - there's nothin' here. It's just that, you know, some places are like people. Some "shine" and some don't. I guess you could say the Overlook Hotel here has somethin' almost like "shining."
Danny Torrance: Is there something bad here?
Dick Hallorann: Well, you know, Doc, when something happens, you can leave a trace of itself behind. Say like, if someone burns toast. Well, maybe things that happen leave other kinds of traces behind. Not things that anyone can notice, but things that people who "shine" can see. Just like they can see things that haven't happened yet. Well, sometimes they can see things that happened a long time ago. I think a lot of things happened right here in this particular hotel over the years. And not all of 'em was good.
Danny Torrance: What about Room 237?
Dick Hallorann: Room 237?
Danny Torrance: You're scared of Room 237, ain't ya?
Dick Hallorann: No I ain't.
Danny Torrance: Mr. Hallorann. What is in Room 237?
Dick Hallorann: Nothin'. There ain't nothin' in Room 237. But you ain't got no business goin' in there anyway. So stay out. You understand? Stay out.

  • there are so many subtle differences in this scene than in the book. is 237 a scarier number than the original 217?

  • @joebarrrs No, I once read that the hotel in which the film was shot didn't want to use the number 217, because their customers might be too scared to sleep in that room after the film was released, so they made up a number which the hotel didn't have.

  • 4:21 - you can see the terror in his eyes, and yet he tries so hard to mask it to protect Danny. Scatman Crothers was an amazing actor.

  • "some places are like people. Some "shine" and some don't." thats such a good quote, Scatman Crothers was such a amazing actor. RIP

  • @Tjpeter7 I never said Kubrick was a genius, I was sarcastically mocking you, which you apparently didn't pick up on. And now let me get this straight: people who call Kubrick a genius are stupid, I'm stupid, and Kubrick was stupid, correct? Are you a member of the 1% of viewers who are more intelligent than the other 99%, but who still don't understand the aesthetics and philosophy of Kubrick's films?

    ...You must be a god.

  • @0180917 it's not just me, it's 9.9/10 viewers, and if Kubrick as you said "is a genius" for making a movie no one really understands (I even doubt he does himself), then I could be a genius just by taking a crap, not because I needed to take it, but because of an obscure, mysterious reason out of everyone's capacity to analyze except my asshole. That's how stupid everyone who thinks Kubrick is a genius sounds when arguing their "reasons".

  • @Tjpeter7 So basically your argument is this: you don't understand this movie, therefore nobody does, therefore it makes no sense at all because Kubrick was retarded. I don't suppose there's any possibility that Kubrick was a genius, which is why many (but not all) people find his films obscure and difficult to understand, is there?

Watch out for Tjpeter7, guys, we've got a cinematic genius over here.

  • @0180917 grammar? maybe, English is my third language, so I'll give you that one. But senseless, naah my friend, senseless are your comments, not mines.

  • @Tjpeter7 I'm also not going to point out your meaningless uses of profanity throughout this conversation or your complete lack of knowledge of grammar. Have a wonderful day.

  • @0180917 na, you already lost any respect I may had for you, I don't take you seriously anymore, I'm sorry but nothing that you may say now will change the opinion I (or anyone else whom reads this comments) on how stupid you and Kubrick are. bye

  • @Tjpeter7 That was simply to show you that the Native American theory is not "my interpretation" as you called it.

  • @0180917 Wikipedia? and you still expect me to take you seriously? boy oh boy, you got lots of real information to catch on with, good luck.

  • @Tjpeter7 Go to the Wikipedia page for this movie and read the section on Native Americans.

  • @Tjpeter7 "an intergalactic war...when Kubrick comes back to life..."

^I'm not even going to respond to that.
