How to Check Bicycle Chain Wear

You can check chain wear in two ways

1) With a chain wear gauge
2) With an inch ruler

The gauge is a "GO" "NO GO" System, where by if the chain does not fit the 0.75% gauge your chain is ok. If the chain fits the 0.75% gauge, your chain is worn but still usable. When it fits 1% wear replace the chain to stop any wear on your cassette, freewheel and chainrings.

I tend to replace my chain at around 0.75%, so that I am sure that other parts of my drive chain aren't going to wear out.

With a ruler, place the 0" mark on one of the chain pins, then count 12 links along to the 12" mark. If the 12" mark aligns perfectly with the chain pin your chain is good. If it is 1/8th past this mark replace your chain. If it is more than 1/8th past this mark, you will have to replace your chain, as well as your freewheel or cassette and possibly your front chainrings.
