A simple repair for the problem on some GM cars where the key gets stuck in the ignition. Can be done for less than $40 and under 2 hours. This is a PERMANENT REPAIR, not a work-around.

  • Hi eatmyfumes, Yes it an be done that way. It all depends on the location of the snap, how much wire you have on hand and your confidence in the old terminals. I'm glad that repair worked for you, and if it wears out again and you decide to use new terminals I will still be here to give you a fair price on the few you need.

  • I'd pry open the console cover first with a screwdriver or even a metal butter knife. It all snaps in place and can be pried open easily using the cut out above the cup holders. If you go in and just say some guy on youtube does this can you check that...has much less power than saying I opened up the console and checked the wires according to this youtube video and I found these two wires had come loose. Most mechanics don't like this repair because it's easy and they can't charge much labor.

  • I don't believe there is a fuse to replace, unfortunately your repair isn't the simple one I found. It is likely you need to replace your ignition switch in your steering column. As I am NOT a trained mechanic I can only speculate on what the cause actually is if the green and purple wires are intact.

  • I have sold over 40 parts now, and the reviews over on ebay have all been positive. So if you are hesitating to purchase rest assured those who have taken the plunge have had much success.

  • My dad and I tackled this together, but spent nothing at all. I'm not 100% sure what we did, but he has a lot of experience in electronics (electrical engineer). We found that not only were those 2 wires broken, but all except one were snapped completely! We wound up extracting the old terminals from the connector and somehow extending and completing the wire using a soldering iron. I wasn't paying close attention, but I wanted to let people know that this can be done with your old terminals

  • I bought a '99 grand prix in October that only had 33,000 miles and I loved it, it was in mint condition, and we haven't had any problems with it until tonight when we came home, and couldn't turn the ignition off and get the key out. I don't think we can fix it without help as I am female and boyfriend doesn't have those tools so should we tell mechanic what you said to do so he doesn't charge me an arm and leg? Please help as I love my car!

  • @edjayboiler100 Flat rate for the repair? Yes, but it is easy to do yourself.

  • @gearkat do you charge a flat rate ? , I`am in the area (MA)

  • I did this repair using the L-shaped terminals as shown on the video and was very pleased with the results. The key comes out of the ignition as shown. Parts were shipped in timely manner.

  • Now I have started this fix however when I go to the wires the green and Purple looks just fine. However I have a Red wire that is broke. I did attach another wire to both ends to complete the circuit but still have a problem with the Key not coming out. Is there also a fuse that might need to be replaced? If so you know what fuse that could be? Thanks
