A RPG (Role Playing Game), this is the second generation of the Pokémon franchise which includes Gold, Silver, and Emerald. Players are able to play the new Johto region along with the previous Kanto region after beating the Elite 4 for the first time.
The second generation of Pokémon video games began in 2000 with the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver for Game Boy Color. Like the previous generation, an enhanced remake titled Pokémon Crystal was later released. It introduced 100 new species of Pokémon (starting with Chikorita and ending with Celebi), for a total of 251 Pokémon to collect, train, and battle. New gameplay features include a day-and-night system (reflecting the time of the day in the real world) which influences events in the game; full use of the Game Boy Color's color palette; an improved interface and upgraded inventory system; better balance in the collection of Pokémon and their moves, statistics and equippable items (a new addition); Pokémon breeding; a new region named Johto and the ability to select the protagonist's gender. Unique to the second generation games is the fact that, after exploring Johto, the player can enter and explore the original Kanto region, which lies to the east of Johto.

As of May 8th, 2009 a 10th anniversary remake of Gold, Silver, and Crystal will be released as Heart Gold and Soul Silver. It will be released in Japan late 2009 and the rest in 2010.

Slowpoke Well (Japanese: ヤドンのいど Yadon Well) is a cave located at the edge of Azalea Town. It is said that a Slowpoke from the well ended a drought that plagued Azalea 400 years before the games' events by Yawning. Slowpoke Well is where the player first encounters the revived Team Rocket, who are cutting off the tails of Slowpoke to sell at their HQ in Mahogany Town.

Dark Cave (Japanese: くらやみのほらあな Dark Cave) is a single-level cave located in eastern Johto. The cave is unique in that the cave is separated into two parts, yet the cave does not change floors between the two areas.
East leads to Route 45 south of Blackthorn
It Junctions with Route 46 north of Route 29
West leads to Route 31 east of Violet

The Ice Path (Japanese: こおりのぬけみち Ice Loophole) is a four-floored cave located in the Johto region that connects Route 44 with Blackthorn City.

The Underground Path is a shopping district stretching below Goldenrod City. This path contains a barber shop, herb shop, and a shop selling items which are simply resold for profit; however, the shops that are open at any given time depend on the day. Trainers also litter this path, and there is an entrance to the basement of the Goldenrod Department Store, initially occupied by Team Rocket.
