AND IT'S MADE IN THIS WAREHOUSE IN KIRKSVILLE BY A GROUP CALLED BULLDOG BIODIESEL.
STARTED FOUR YEARS AGO, THE GROUP TAKES WASTE VEGETABLE OIL, COMBINES IT WITH METHANOL, AND CONVERTS THE MIXTURE TO BIODIESEL.
JOSH HIRNER IS THE GROUP'S MANAGER AND HAS BEEN INVOLVED SINCE BULLDOG BIODIESEL'S INCEPTION.
HE SAYS ITS COME A LONG WAY SINCE IT BEGAN.
We started as a group of chemistry and ag-science majors, and essentially we had nothing, no money, no building, no processor, no oil." (:10)
ONE VISITOR TO THE CONFERENCE BELIEVED BULLDOG IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOMEGROWN ENERGY.
"What I've been impressed with is that it's doable, and that on a small scale right here we see a very successful operation, and they're using resources that they have right here in their backyard. And doing it successfully. " (:13)
BULLDOG GETS ITS VEGETABLE OIL FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS.
THE VEGETABLE OIL IS FREE AND IS A BYPRODUCT OF FRYERS AND GRILLS IN RESTAURANTS.
THE OIL HAS TO BE FILTERED TO REMOVE ANY LARGE PARTICLES.
AFTER IT'S FILTERED, THE OIL HAS TO SETTLE BEFORE BEING USED IN VEHICLES.
"We're diverting away waste from the waste stream, and so instead of dumping all this oil we take it away from those businesses and turn it into a usable fuel." (:11)
WHILE NOT ABLE TO SELL OIL TO THE PUBLIC, THE BIODIESEL IS USED FOR VEHICLES IN TRUMAN STATE'S AGRICULTURE FARM, AND THEY'RE IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO GET ALL THE TRUMAN STATE VEHICLES TO USE THE FUEL.
THE GROUP SAYS GAS MILEAGE FOR BIODIESEL IS ABOUT THE SAME AS PETROLEUM BASED DIESEL.
