I don't live in phoenix. I live in new york. I asked because on all train stations on all lines there should be turnstiles.

Nope, the Valley Metro Light Rail is run on the honor system. Not a turnstile in sight. There are attendants who will come through the car and check to make sure you have either a pass or a receipt for your ticket (printed on the platform).
