Strange Object Flying Over Long Island NY 10/08/06

U.F.O. Sighting on Long Island NY

After a go-kart race at the Nassau Coliseum on October 8 2006. We noticed something strange in the sky. It looked like a big bonnet hat the size of a Jumbo jet. We thought maybe its a parachute with no one underneath. But that can't be. May be its a weather balloon. But this object was as large as a Jumbo jet. Weather balloons are much smaller than that. I mean this thing was big. It was flying higher as we saw & fast. Other people must have seen this thing on Long Island that day. Please leave comments if you have. It's a giant canopy of balloons that were for a grand opening. That got loose. Silver and white. It's not a craft of any kind.

Looks like a curved 'parafoil' parachute. The person flying it must be whooping out loud!

The kid's being very sensible and saying 'Maybe it's a kite'. Good for her! The group skeptic.

@peterloohunt It was too big & too high to be a kite. It may have been a wedding canopy that got lose. You can see strings on each side. This thing was about two hundred feet wide.

@Hippiegeo How do you know it was 200ft wide? Distance vs size are notoriously difficult to estimate?

I really think it's just a paraglider. The fact that you can't see the pilot is just one of those weird haze, distance and lighting effects.

@peterloohunt Because at one point it was right over the Go-kart race at the Coliseum. It was the size of a Jumbo jet. My camera messed up & I was unable to take the shot of it at the time. This was no paraglider. We see those on Long Island all the time. Up close it looked like a big Bonnet hat with wings..

@Hippiegeo How do you know it was 'right over the Go-kart race at the Coliseum'? How did you measure it's distance as compared to how far away the Go-kart race at the Coliseum was? Apart from your instinct that it was 'right over the Go-kart race at the Coliseum' how do you know how far away from you it was? How did you measure how far away from you it was? How do you know what distance it was from you? It really, really looks like a paraglider seen through a blurry telephoto lens.

@Hippiegeo How do you know it was directly above that particular landmark, without knowing the distance this object was from you? It's almost impossible to judge distances through atmospheric haze, and beyond a certain range, binocular vision no longer supplies depth information.

I once got fooled by an object that looked extremely large and metallic. I was as certain as yourself that it was at least 6ft tall. But when I grabbed the binoculars it was a small heart shaped mylar balloon.
