Unclaimed Money

Unclaimed Money is dealt with under the unclaimed money act 1995. The amendment enables the chief commissioner to publish details of these amounts of unclaimed money and the identity of the owners of the money (if known) in the same way as the chief commissioner publishes details of other unclaimed money received under the act. The amendments also enable an enterprise that has paid an amount of unclaimed money to the owner of the money, after having paid the same amount to the chief commissioner under the act, to recover that amount from the chief commissioner.

Unclaimed Money is done typically by state, although you could also be owed money by the federal government. However, federal government employees are not allowed to help you get such monies. States don't have time to track down and send money to everyone they owe, but they are free to collect interest off of it while it sits in a bank somewhere. Or, as many states have done, you can search online for the database and quickly check to see if your name is on the list. Some databases have even further details about the claims, such as which company owed the money to you or when it arrived (see resources below).
