I want to upload this video with as much explanation I can give of my first experience handling a pregnant cat. (Escuse the music. The boyfriend felt it were appropriate to play music after our poor cat had just suffered for 6 hours :-S ) During her pregnancy I was constantly searching online for as much information I could find but was left slightly confused. So for all you first timers I hope this helps because I nearly had a panic attack and fainted. LOLZ (not funny)
Obviously with every cat their symptoms differ. My cat didn't show many signs of nesting until she hit labour. The last week of her pregnancy she was a lot more energetic, playful and a little bit aggressive. I had no idea when her due date was so I made sure to keep a close eye on any changes. She is a tiny cat and her belly did not show too much until the last week where the babies moving were clearly visible and her tummy grew a lot. Clear indications of her going into labour was a constant need for attention she followed me everywhere meowing at me but when I gave her food she ignored it and continued to meow until I gave her love which then lead her to purring constantly no breaks just constant purring.
She then lay in her nesting box which I had made 6 weeks into her pregnancy and she had never entered ONCE until she reached labour (really weird) her breathing rate increased and she was trembling a little bit. She was clearly uncomfortable as she tossed and turned and kept walking around her nesting box, getting in and out.
When her water broke I noticed a few droplets that lead to her and then noticed she was sitting in a puddle of clear orange liquid licking herself. I called the vet and they reassured me that this was ok and that birth would be due in a maximum of 4 - 6 hours.
It was 5 hours into her labour when she started to "scream" like I've never heard her scream before. It was really distressing to watch her in so much pain. By this point I felt really faint and thought I was about to faint so I left the room and my boyfriend had to calm me down. Only 10 mins later he went in to check on her and casually said "yup theres a kid" I had sick sick images running through my head of the kitten being stuck or something going wrong but he assured me that it was ok and she was licking it. I walked in and suddenly everything turned from a horror film into heaven!!!!!!!!!!
She's been an amazing cat and mama, still really affectionate and doesn't mind me stroking her babies.
It is now 15 hours after she has given birth and she's hardly left the nesting box, feeding the kittens and cleaning them she's doing good.
First kitten (all black) born at 10:17 pm. Second kitten born at 11:20 pm (stripey) all done by herself at home in her nesting box.
