In 1990, SNK brought over their very own console called the Neo Geo. It wasn't a typical console like the Nintendo or Sega systems. The Neo Geo was marketed as a 24-bit console capable of playing the exact same games as its coin-op relative called the Multi Video System (MVS). In this clip, Johnny Arcade visits one of the SNK Corporation plants in America which distributes the 4-game coin-op across the country. Johnny shows you with a Neo Geo memory card - you can finish your gameplaying either at home or in the arcades!

NOTE: I apologize. This clip isn't complete. The original recording ran out of space on the VHS. If there's anybody with a complete clip - please acknowledge so I can delete this. I rather have someone with the full review than a half-ass clip :)

  • neo geo was priced at $650 for the system and $250 for EACH game cart. who in their right mind thought that this would ever sell to the public? back in the early 90s, that was almost double what the dollar is worth today. ridiculous. the graphics were also too choppy (ALWAYS pixelated) and frames always seemed to lack fluid animation.

  • The NeoGeo console came down in price ($450) a couple years after its release. Unless the games were the "100 megashock series" they came down in price considerably. In the early 90s, I bought the AES just to rent the games. Renting the games cost about $7 per week. Luckly, I lived by a domestic / Import video game store when I did ^_^ I dunno, it must've been your TV. The Neo games weren't choppy . Maybe you were confused when characters or levels had scaling effects. SNES was pixelated.

  • @Grooveraider compare the arcade street fighter 2 animation of sprite characters you control to fatal fury. the sf2 motion is FAR smoother. the neo geo fighting games from that time period and even beyond are choppy with missing frames of animation.

  • @scir91 - Perhaps in comparison to the almighty SF2 - earlier SNK fighters seemed abit choppy in animation. But that's just nitpicking to me. I still have a great time with my Neo games, today! I'm really glad SNK took the risk to bring an arcade console home. And I don't regret ever buying one neither. Whats even amazing the Neo Geo's lifespan continued long after SNES and Genesis. Its pretty remarkable.

  • Yeah, I had a Neo Geo and although I liked the idea of using the memory card at home and then at the arcade, I never used it. However, at $200 a pop you couldn't afford all the games, so then the memory card would still be worthwhile to save those games you only played in the arcade and didn't own.

  • @LSpear76RCN - Very similar story...I bought an AES with Fatal Fury almost a decade ago. Even though I knew I couldn't afford to purchase the games - I was fortunate to live near a video game rental outlet that specialized in AES. So i'd constantly rented Neo Geo titles. The memory card was definitely a lifesaver. Taking the memory card to the arcades, I hardly spend money playing MVS because I owned the AES ^_^ Headphone feature was a mess because the volume was always cranked to the max O_o

  • This is actually a pretty advanced idea for back in the day. My only question is if you already own a Neo Geo, why would you even go to an arcade anymore to play Neo Geo? And how many people actually owned Neo Geo systems when they were new? I remember when I was a kid Neo Geo was this mythical machine that nobody owned. It was way too expensive and nobody had even seen one for sale at a store.

Dont Play Classic Game Consoles on a damn FLAT TV, Flat TV's got no Scanlines all Classic Consoles look pixelated on that. Neo Geo got higher Resolution as a SNES, more Power in every Way, and Games like Kof96,97,98 beat the Shit out from SF. Earlier Games are not so smooth, but in things Graphics, Number of Sprites, Paralax Scrolling and Colours @ the same time, the most Games look better. Compare Neo Geo Games on a Neo Geo with the SNes Ports.

  • Man, does that show bring back memories. Who new a few years later I would own a NEO GEO. NEO GEO was way ahead of it's time.

  • What a fool! Who in their right mind would waste $.50 playing the EXACT same version of the game they own at home?

  • Wow. This definitely succeeded

  • the most awesome console ever made , but also the most scary prized gaming in market =.=

  • @scir91 $650 in 1990 = $1,126.04 in 2011

  • If I didn't know better, I'd swear Johnny Arcade was a young John Stamos (Stivi Paskoski, actually). Just sayin', there's quite a resemblance there.

  • Neo Geo was actualy a good system, but little pricey. This idea was kinda good, but unfortunately the arcade died, and this memoory card thing never caugt on.

  • @Doom2Guy but of course since many operators thought they weren't going to be used, they didn't care about setting the headphone volume, and as a result, the games would be obscenely loud.

  • @room128 if you owned a neo geo in the early 90s you were part of the 1%
