How are you going to benefit all society if there is no benefit for the individual? If the one should not be cared about then surely the multitude of ones should not either. And can you know how to care and benefit others if you don't know how to benefit yourself?

higher goal, for me, is not something which is stepped and relative to the individual... i suspect higher goal refers to a higher order goal, eg to think of benefiting all society, or all living things... that is, not relative to small minded self... though pierre might be describing the 'mainstream' sensibility...?
