BBC Scotland Documentary - As a partner in the British Empire, Scotland began the 20th century with an advanced economy and a world-beating heavy industry. But in the closing decades its sense of Britishness was in doubt and a Scottish Parliament sat in Edinburgh for the first time since 1707. Charting Scotland's darkest century, Neil Oliver discovers a country driven to self-determination through a series of economic crises so deep that her most striking export became her own disillusioned population.

  • @FireEyedMaidOfWar Blah blah blah. You can't provide evidence for your false historical statements, you can't explain your love of English literature yet hatred of England, you try and explain WWI by talking about a war 100 years previous, and now you resort to trying to insult me. Grow up, get an education, grow some bollocks.

  • @FireEyedMaidOfWar During Napoleonic Wars Germany didn't even exist, that's such a stupid statement to make! You are clutching at straws now. You really do look pathetic... a bit like France.

  • @FireEyedMaidOfWar DNA evidence PROVES a melting pot of races, NOT an annihilation of natives. This is getting boring now, you are plain wrong, as the EVIDENCE disproves you. Change the record. Just because some trumped up Roman in a villa in Britain feared the new immigrants, doesn't prove the everyday person was wiped out by the immigrants.

  • @Wolfhaines: You do not sound like a tough grizzled old Scotsman but some kind of dandified English nancy-boy, who is afraid of wars and you are indubitably no sea-dog but the sort of pasty landlubber I have always despised. I'll warrant, the most exciting thing that has happened to you limpid prawn in a whole year, was the day when you forgot to put sugar in your porridge!

  • @Wolfhaines: As for the Great War: During the Napoleonic Wars France had always troops on German soil but still we lost and so had the Germans in the Great War; remember: The Germans were the ones that attacked (or to be more precise: To mobilize their troops faster)…

  • @Wolfhaines: What need I? If you fail to read the Roman and early European sources about the German tribes I cannot help you and if you believe that the Anglo-Saxon conquest of the Roman province Britain was less violent and bloody than the Norman-French conquest by William the Conqueror I cannot convince you that this is certainly not the case; the last written messages from Britain are desperate cries for help from Rome against the invading Saxons and Angles.

  • @FireEyedMaidOfWar There is ZERO evidence for this so called genocide of the Britons, and you have yet to provide any. Simply repeating the same statement only makes you look like a dick.Your view of history is so warped it is quite scary.Fail to see how France won WWI when for the entire war you had German troops on your soil, but you had none on theirs. You're an uneducated dick. How about you actually travel the world, you read more than one source of history books, and come back to me then.

  • @Wolfhaines: While my obsession with Shakespeares comes from me being half-English by blood and this is something which does haunt oneself a lot; considering what increditable nonsense the English have done in North America, India and China.

  • @Wolfhaines: And once more: There is no such thing as Britain anymore, after the invading Anglo-Saxons did slaughter the poor Brits and drove the few survivors out; today the English call their realm thus, in order to hide the subjugation of the Irish, Welsh and Scots. While in World War II the English did nothing and were the lame foot of the Americans after their surrender in 1941; and there was no battle for Britain, as the German did not launch an invasion.

  • @Wolfhaines: Militarily we did win the war against Germany in 1918 (with having three lame foots: England, the dull-brained Americans and Italy, while the Germans had one with Turkey), because our Napoleon was betrayed as well in 1814 but still nobody would dispute the victory of Russia, Austria and Prussia; but politically and economically we have lost it as our foolish government failed to realize the menace of the USA and so did not take the necessary measures against it.
