On December 19, 2009, Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) was the 60th vote required to pass the Senate version of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as "Obamacare" over the objections of a large majority of his constituents. Nelson's vote was secured by what came to called the "Cornhusker Kickback" a $100,000,000 provision that shielded the State of Nebraska from the increased costs of Medicaid under the new law. The Senator also angered pro-life groups for failing to get strong language in the bill to prevent federal funding of abortion.
