I just plonk a strip of Bluetack on top of the bridge. It does the job, does not rattle and is cheap (a few pennies). I imagine a violin mute would also work.
Thanks ! I have tried this device nd it workd to some degree. The neighbors still hate me! There is a better banjo mute that clips onto the strings behind the bridge (the neighbors still hate me)

Problems with the mute. I have an open back banjo and I place a towel in the back. It sounds better and no buzz rattle or sound changes.

I think you're bang on about developing a lighter hand--it would only increase the expressive range of your playing.
I like the sound of the muted banjo-ukes better. It could be due to the audio gain of your microphone.
Another possibility would be to remove the resonator, you think? I've seen many without the resonators.
Many thanks for the many tips you've shared.
Cheers!
