Saw two of them out there also in '97 on a tour. Place is mostly scrubland! Not nearly as impressive as in most photos and videos. Pads and crawlers were rusty.

thats awesome. to see 2 shuttles like that.

@TehPowerLand The Russian shuttle, Buran launched, flew, and landed unmanned. The US shuttle design needs special (and somewhat inexpensive) modification to land unmanned. It cannot launch or fly unmanned.

lol @ the pig, awesome xd

Wonder what happened to that pig at 3:05 when the next shuttle launched.

Actually, Space Shuttles were made and landing etc in 1980. Guess what? Buran flew once in 1988. 8 years later! So how can that be possible? Hmmm???
-
No it wasn't

The Buran is the first man made vehicle that took of , flown and landed completely automatically with no humans on board, get a fucking clue!
WTF! Pigs in space?! (3:05-3:17) Is this the muppet show? :-)
The comments to this vid claims one of the shuttles will be moved from one lauchpad to another. Why did they put it there in the first place? The shuttles are assembled in a large building and then moved to a launchpad. Why not just leave it in the assembly building until 39A is cleared? Does anybody know?

Atlantis is going to the Hubble Space Telescope and as such has no safe haven at the ISS. Should something go wrong and they need a rescue shuttle, Endeavour was on the pad for a quick launch.
Even after the shuttle leaves the VAB there's a lot of work that happens at the launch complex, and with only 25 days of food/fuel on Atlantis they would need to move much faster than that.
With STS-125 being delayed, Atlantis is moving back to the VAB and Endeavour to complex 39A.
