Apheresis (ay fur ee sis) is a donation of selected blood components, usually platelets.
Who needs platelets?
Cancer patients, those receiving organ or bone marrow transplants, victims of traumatic injuries and patients undergoing open heart surgery
What about the medicine I take?
These are the most common medicines that will affect your apheresis donation:
Aspirin or products containing aspirin (like Excedrin)Waiting period48 hours
Coumadin, Heparin, Lovenox and Warfarin Waiting period 7 days
How often can I be an apheresis donor?
You may donate every 7 days, up to 24 times a year.
I hope to begin donating platelets soon. I have been donating whole blood since my 16th birthday, but have yet to donate double red blood, platelets, or plasma.
