This s the Story of how Vermont the most Republican State in the Nation in the 1930's becomes the most Liberal state in the Nation within 60 years... Did it come 180 degrees or was Vermont just Vermont and the rest of the country, and more specifically the Republican Party what changed.

  • While I would agree that rural Vt was conservative... the word had a different bent in the 1930's then it does today. Populist would be a better word to describe the progressive republican. Remember Teddy Roosevelt founded the Bull Moose to rein in the Big Money power brokers... Aiken was that kind of populist. T They were against big government as well as big industrialist. Aiken was for Rural Electification... by the Gov. since the Big Boys would not bring power to the rural areas...

  • i have an idea, vermont republicans should adopt fiscal conservatism, constitutionalism, social liberalism/civil liberties and be against constant war.

  • rural folks werent progressive, progressives were almost entirely middle class urban whites. Rural farmers may be populist but all other rural voters were conservative
