  • Styrofoam used was plain white 1/2" insul foam sheet, picked up from Home Depot. Thickness was reduced to about 3/8" - about the thinest section that I've found to work in loose sand. Any shapomg required was done with hot knife/hot wire. Available from Hot Wire Foam Factory

Aluminum was melted to 1650F - to ensure the pour didn't cool before mold was completely filled/foam vaporized.

  • Try green sand or oil sand casting. I think you will get a far superior casting. If you have to mill the 'B' why not mill the 'B' from plate.

  • I don't want to sound like a hardon or anything but this was only good as an exercise. Your casting came out so rough and needing so much work that it makes this whole thing a waste of time & resource when that 'B' could have been machined from solid billet more easily and speedily than making your casting and then reworking it. Nice job otherwise though.

  • What kind of styrofoam did you use ?
