New Jersey Bear Tracks recorded in the dead of winter. It is apparent that New Jersey Bears are active all winter and this can be a contributing reason why they are so large. A 1000 pounder will not be out of the question in the near future. While hiking allamuchy Mountain state park (North Section) I came across several areas of bear tracks which were fresh. It is February 8 and can't get much colder. Last week I recorded bear tracks just off of sussex branch trail about a mile from the Waterloo parking area. The adolescent bears in effect eat and grow all year VS the hibernating bears of more northern and western states. This accounts for the larger size of New Jersey bears compared to other states. Food is prevalent from Garbage cans, road kills, outdoor pets that disappear, Swamps, and the Deer population which is hunted by coyotes.
