"Sea Rapture" (Eric Coates)
Tom Burke (Tenor) with Orchestra. 1929 .

Dominion Gramophone Records Ltd. issued their first discs in October 1928 but failed to flourish disappearing from the market by August 1930. The catalogue included material from the American Cameo and Grey Gull labels as well as their own list of artists. Popular celebrities who found their way on to Dominion records included Elsie Carlisle, Tommy Handley, Jay Wilbur (a musical director of the company) and Lou Abelardo. They sold for half a crown in a competitive market place.

In 1929 the 'B' series was introduced with the company offering a series of classical records. One such attempt was recording Best Selling Authors reading from their own works. Compton Mackenzie. A.A Milne, Ian Hay, Rebecca West amongst others read from their works. Twelve records in a handsome folder were issued in October 1929 priced at one guinea.
From La Scala, Milan the tenors Guido Volpi and Oreste de Bernardi were signed and from England, Tom Burke.

Tom Burke was a hugely popular singer who appeared on a variety of labels, alas even as big a name as he failed to boost sales and by July 1930, recording by Dominion had ceased.

The Classical Blue Dominion label is very handsome in my opinion. A red and black label was also issued in 1930 although the most common tend to be the white/cream labels.

  • A sincere thank you to PJBGORDON for uploading, " The Minstrel Boy" by Tom Burke. Well Done!

  • @Sullivaniam100

I have uploaded Tom Burke's Columbia recording of "The Minstrel Boy" on my PJBGordon Channel on YouTube (Part 30 of "1928 Salon Decca Gramophone").

  • Could someone please post Tom Burke's version of "THE MINSTREL BOY"?

    It is great! Thank You

  • There is another good recording of this song by Frank Titterton in my collection: Decca F.1646, recorded on 10 September 1929, with Leslie Heward at the piano.

It was FT's first Decca record under his own name.

His earlier Decca offerings had used the pseudonym 'Norton Colyer'.

  • Do you have Tom Burke's Nessun Dorma.
