What's referred to as the Moeller technique is just an articulated side movement incorporated into an up down stroke, all the joints are capable- wrists, elbows, ankles, knees even neck.

You can even do the movement with the fingers.

  • Moeller doesn't own, nor has a legit claim to any technique, You promote a drum technique (hopefully freely), not lay claim to it.

Petrillo has every right to give whatever name to any motion, grip, technique etc. he pleases, just as any other drummer.

Who are we going to credit matched grip for, or marching grip?

  • das is doch die mama/papa mühle?

  • @Iconoclastic8 He said that in that he doesn't know the REAL Moeller technique... which he actually sort-of does. As a private student of his, I discussed with him about Jojo Mayer's DVD, and he said that the extra motion is just not needed.

  • My teacher always said Years back just have an end result of how u want to play ang just get there how u do it doesn't matter. Enjoy the playing to many people want to break down everything!!

  • His elbow does move, although not as much as that of some of the Moeller technique adherents. Note that he is also not raising the stick as high, so maybe for very loud playing he would have to use more elbow (as in full Moeller stroke).

  • Just saw him recently in a masterclass. His movement doesn't involve the elbow and upper arm- it's purely using the forearm and wrist. Moeller includes moving the elbow out from your body. Even though I believe the elbow movement does aid the stroke, he had clear and valid views on not using it e.g. he can get the same power from the forearm and wrist alone, he thinks the elbow is a waste of energy etc. Remember Moeller was a drummer first not a technique

  • Because Moeller has many interpretations...This is his way of doing his own thing. Notice he doesn't do all the weird elbow movements.

  • It's the Moeller technique. Why is he renaming a known technique? This is just confusing. He even admits he doesn't even know what a Moeller movement is.

  • It's a low moeller stroke with a pull-out accent....
