When I first saw this video it was a bit of a premiere for me to in seeing Weingartner conduct. I understand he had a certain dignity on the podium that would become less popular as the century wore on. Freishutz was one of the first operas he conducted about fifty years earlier than this but I think the good players in this orchestra probably made the music come alive again in this great performance.

Would have been so much fun to have the same recording of Rampal sweating through Der Rosenkavalier, sight-reading through the whole score at the Paris Opéra... Alas we didn't have video recordings for every opera performance...

My flute teacher used to call him God.
(Her way of trying to impress on me his importance in the flute world).
Is it my imagination (and perhaps bias) or did the orchestras sound better in those days? This is just wonderful.

The golden era of music was amazing, it should be a sound we all should revive back in the trouble musical times we are in nowadays.
