The fact that everyone seems to hate Akainu shows that he's a true villain. In most cases a villain isn't someone you should like, that's why they have that role.

There was nothing Garp could do to save Ace or Luffy. Not because of his duty, not because of his pride but because of THEIR pride. Garp is a marine, Ace and Luffy decided to be pirates. To be saved by their marine grandfather when they are in trouble would not be great, it would be insulting, it would invalidate every choice they had made until now, they would rather die then this. Stop with the Garp hate already, Ace and Luffy made their choice and knew perfectly the dangers of being pirates.
