The Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce announced the winner of the 2009 Athena Award.

The prize went to Eden Prairie High School business teacher Karen Brettingen. Brettingen teaches business and marketing classes and is an advisor to the Eden Prairie Chamber Student Membership program.

The student membership program offers 20 high school students the opportunity to become chamber members, with all the networking, job shadowing and internship opportunities that go along with it. It is the first program of its kind in the nation.

The award ceremony took place this afternoon at Olympic Hills Golf Club. Kristin Nimsger (Nims-gurr), an attorney for Kroll Ontrack, was the keynote speaker.

The votes are in for Edina Promenade and Grandview Square People's Choice Awards and the Gyr Family Cycle along the Promenade won first place.

The sculpture was made by Perci Chester, who will receive an award of $1,000.

Second place went to Mosaic Chairs by Fuller Cowles and Constance Mayeron, who will receive an award of $750. Honorable Mention, which comes with an award of $500, went to Minnesota Echo Turtle by Kathy Gustafson.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Edina Public Art Committee, will continue to be open for viewing through the winter and into spring 2010. The viewers have expressed interest in extending the exhibit, so the winners are invited to show for a second year ending into the spring of 2011.

Every year the Richfield Fire Department hosts an Open House that coincides with National Fire Prevention Week. The Open House this year is Saturday, Oct. 10 from 1-4pm at Richfield Fire Station No. 1, 6700 Portland Ave. S (attached to City Hall).

This will be the second attempt at having this year's event. It was originally schedule for last Thursday but cold and rain forced the postponement.

Here are some of the highlights:

• People can tour the fire trucks from Richfield.
• We give away over 500 plastic fire helmets.
• The Airport Fire Dept. (MAC) displays a unique aircraft crash-rescue truck.
• HCMC Ambulance Service has an ambulance for touring.
• Kids can squirt the fire hose towards a model of a house and try to "put out the fire".
• Kids can try on the fire gear.
• We serve hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream treats and juice while supplies last.
• We hold drawings at 2, 2:30 & 3 for prizes donated by local merchants.
