Kohoutek was the name of a comet discovered in 1973 by Dr Lubos Kohoutek. Its approach to earth in 1974 caused many to believe the end of the world was coming, in the end it missed by a spectacular distance and was, as such, as disappointment. The song is supposed to convey a sense of anticlimax.
Personally, I always think of this song as a reminder that reality never stands up to expectations. It's my number 1 favourite REM song ever.

Who or what is "kohoutek"? It means a "little rooster" in Czech.
