We took the overnight train from Shanghai to Xi'an, China. It was a 15 hour journey and half of that under the cover of night.

The countryside looked positively post-apocalyptic. Factories intermingled with residential homes with no regard for urban planning. Coal power plants dotted the landscape. Visibility was no more than 1km due to pollution.

The one thing we noticed above all was the absolute lack of life. There was the odd person walking alone, the odd car, the odd dog, but no real life. It looked deserted. Houses, buildings, factories... all looked deserted, abandoned..
