Safe Routes to School. Kloosterveen, Assen, Netherlands

Virtually all children in this country arrive at school by bike. So do their teachers, and the parents. Wonderful cycle paths make this possible as you can see in this video of a new housing estate in Assen.

This is not "bike to school day" or any other kind of special event. It is what happens on every single day of the year. When this video was taken, the outside temperature was -2 C ( 28 F ).

This is a primary school. Secondary schools are spread much further apart and children cycle up to 20 km each way to get to them.

Notice the cycles that are parked at the cyclelanes. That's the parents cycles. Could you imagen if all the parents came with theire cars.

THERE IS and us poor motorists have to pay for it. In this modern day and age why are these road tax dodgers allowed on roads which are for cars?.

Small kids sometimes wear helmets, but most don´t. There is a difference though, it depends where they live. Here, where I live, kids have to ride more dangerous roads and often wear helmets and reflecting clothes, simply because otherwise drivers won´t see them. Grown ups hardly ever wear helmets, only those on race bikes. We used to ride our bikes to school too, every day, no matter what weather. Hot, cold, snow, ice, rain, no problem.
