Part 1 of 3! Here, I took some of your favorite cartoons from the 80s and 90s, found the German versions, and added fake subtitles that sounded like the English.

I never got that Turtle censor thing - the word "Ninja" is too violent, but not the things the characters do? They wield weapons and fight people. Sure. But the word "Ninja"? Abhorrable!

Also notice that they censored out the nunchucks (don't remember which turtle that was. So swords are ok, but nunchucks aren't?

Perhaps the worry was IMMITATION there. Dull versions of bladed melee weapons are sold to children all the time, and the chance of hurting themselves is very small. With nunchucks, they're on ropes, so the risk of someone hitting themselves with them is higher. Just a theory though, and the whole censor thing was lame.

I looked on wikipedia, and can't find an answer. Apparently they eventually just gave Michaelangelo a grappling hook instead of nunchucks. I also found it hilarious that they removed the word ninja because it only had violent connotations. So i the song they changed "Splinter taught them to be ninja teens" to "Splinter taught them to be fighting teens". Because "fighting" doesn't have exclusively violent connotations.

I also found that in Soul Blade, the British changed one of the characters nunchucks with a three sectioned staff. It's ok, just as long as you have a third chain and rope on there.

By the way: "Wunderbar" = wonder bra is really a funny translation. Actually it means "wonderful".
