  • you can see the total respect maynard had for al.

  • They are all superb! I believe what you're seeing is the rhythm coming out of them. They don't have to GET into it, it's overflowing them! Al's playing is outstanding, technically, and Maynard is playing with more soul and emotion and style, and he can't stand still because the music is driving him, man! I feel the same way when I'm playing. The emotion of the music comes out in more ways than one!

  • @rsmith7042 I agree with you on this. Did you know Al Hirt did not " make it" untill after he was in his 50's .He

played in a "firemans' band and went from there.

  • Two entirely different styles, yet both great. I enjoyed seeing Maynard really getting into Al's solo and having fun. He was true to his word regarding something he said in one of his clinics...."don't compete". I think both of those guys were having a ball up there and it showed in their musical performance. RIP guys and know that you gave a lot of listening pleasure to millions over the years.

  • It has been rumored that Al Hirt bought Wynton Marsalis his first horn. Any truth to this? Marsalis NEVER mentions him.

  • Al really brought it!!!

  • two all time greats. One my grandfather played like, and the other he said was too wild for his taste. lol. you can guess which is which.

  • I wish an artist would do a tribute to Al Hirt. Since he left us, so few artists seem to know who he was and how well he played - he was a bugler at Fort Dix, NJ in WWII or we woul dhave lost him. Most of his boot camp buddies died on D-Day. He had a PhD from the Ohio COnervatory of music. For me the top three trumpeters of all time are Louis Armstrong, Al Hirt, Maynard Fergueson, Harry James, and Brian casserly of Cornet Chop Suey.

  • Both GREAT players and two of my all-time favorites.......but both are

'stretching' to make something happen on this one.....through '800' choruses of the

blues it doesn't materialize.....Maynard even seems to holding back and purposely staying away from his specialty extreme high note playing.......Al, frustrated, reaches deep down into his Arban excercises.......but nothing is going to save this 'turkey' blues poor excuse for a head!

  • For those who think Al Hirt was just a fat jolly guy from New Orleans who played "Corny" pop hits, dig this clip, and also look up Miles' quote about him,to the effect that he knew Al Could play!

  • H'es AL "THE KING" Hirt...jumbo just watch how he ends only the king as the final word I love it !

  • @darknipple its not about the song, its about maynard's tone, range, endurance, and accuracy, they are two completely different players, stop comparing them, enjoy it.
