@PanosDCC You're half right, the "new" engine was actually the ancient Ford engine. It was the Subaru which was new, not that you'd know.

Of the guys who Pre-Qualified.....Olivier Grouillard DNQ; Gabriele Tarquini qualified 26th and retired after lap 41; Aguri Suzuki qualfied 9th and finished 6th while team mate Éric Bernard qualified 8th and finished 4th.

That was Subaru's last appearance in F1. With the new engine, Gachot indeed pre-qualified for some races (well, he had to beat only the Life and the Eurobruns), but he never qualified in a single race in 1990.
