  • In the 1950's and 60's I grew up in Montauk, New York which is on eastern Long Island and was very aware of America's whaling history visiting the local and regional museums. I collected available whale prints, illustrations, photos and whatever. Before the European settlers arrived the Montaukett Indians were harvesting the beached whales and taught the English settlers how to harpoon whales swimming just off the beach. Leviathan is a great read. Enjoy.
