Same problem.
Solved it by disabling KMS and then installing catalyst driver.
Add radeon.modeset=0 at the end of grub boot command to disable KMS.
Or in Arch, create a file /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.con
f with "options radeon modeset=0" in it. -
Yup, had the same problem trying to install 11.10 on my mom's laptop.

@reeManne Yeah I have a computer from the same line (C670D-00U) and it does EXACTLY that for linux. Otherwise it plays games as fast as a mexican with your bike.

@beryozinka Not yet. I only managed to boot a GRML distribution without full X resolution (only VESA).
