HEALTHY HEROES

Multi-media Health Promotion Education

Our Mission

To bring the concept of "Healthy Heroes" to life in a student-friendly, fast-paced, live presentation thereby empowering youth to ask questions and take control of their health.
Healthy Heroes runs like a fast-moving train. It is produced to captivate audiences with a limited attention span. As it is crucial that students retain the knowledge shared in the presentation, multimedia, audience participation and high-energy variety are used to effectively instill this information in the minds of children. Research shows that students are more likely to retain and utilize information presented in a multi-media format than that given in standard presentation-style speaking.

This 45 minute program features:
· Music
· Video
· Live performance
· Audio Theater
· Audience participation
· Open discussion

"Healthy Heroes" features national performing artists, Rich and Debbie Derwald. For over 20 years they have been using their high-energy musical talent and production skills to engage and entertain audiences of all ages. Richie has produced more than 15 tribute and variety shows and is currently producing the 25th annual Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Gala with local legend Susan Banks.

Program Goals

1. Increase awareness of importance of physical activity

Fun with Fitness: Combining music and movement, students experiment with elements of fitness including strength, endurance and flexibility. Intergenerational participation includes students and teachers/staff.

2. Familiarize youth with basics of nutrition

Video: Our "Pyramid Patrol" video features superhero characters representing the 5 food groups. Students are challenged to select foods from the pyramid to create a balanced, healthy diet. Such characters as "Captain Carbo", "Milk Man" and "Meathead" combat "Sweet Tooth" and company to inspire youth to take part in ultimately deciding what they put into their bodies.

3. Instill the components of "Healthy Heroes" in students' memories

Audio Theater: A simulated radio commercial highlighting the program techniques.

Theme Song: an original, interactive pop song which encourages students to remember and utilize the program techniques to take part in their own health and wellness.

Ask the Professor: an open discussion with a host and a costumed comedy sidekick which focuses on the principals of the "Healthy Heroes" program.

Reality Check: students receive a "Healthy Heroes" workbook featuring puzzles, games and "mad libs" recapping program goals and content. The "Healthy Heroes" logo and website are printed on it. This take home piece is another way of raising awareness of the program.
