You might want to use certificates for S/MIME as verifications. Or give out ones of your own, for lower classes.
Then we could use different classes of certificates, like call 3 only for email, class 2 for persons and class 1 for companies and celeberties that really want to be carefull with their trade marks.
And best of all, we could have email in gMail that we all could start to trust, and not like now when it is so easy to get email from santa clause or president nixon.

Still nothing for the rest of us, huh?

It seems to me, if my business has been verified for quite some time on Google Place, that it should be tied to "Verified Business" that's an idea. :)

I can't find on google your number :/
This could be Google's answer to the "common name" controversy. Meaning you're free to choose any name but if it's a pseudonym it won't show as verified, which is a reasonable compromise. If that's what this is, it's the right move.

Alternative name = pseudonym. If they allow pseudonyms to be "verified", then they have to allow it for everyone and not for only a bunch of dumbshit "celebrities".
