Sorry, I had to mix the soundtrack from two different tapes (one from Pearlie Mae Allen) with different broadcast-waves-mistakes. My tries to find a better one since the 1970s remained without success.
I hope these different uploads of Red Allen through the years 1933-67 will show a bow and Red Allen´s versatility is shown by his winning of Down Beat awards in both the traditional jazz and the modern jazz categories.
From his beginning in New Orleans (look 1961 Chic. & All That Jazz) where he started his own style as snare drummer and trumpeter in the second line, playing against the line and offbeat in his father´s marching band - over his swinging work with Luis Russell, Fletcher Henderson & MBRB (look 1936 Sat.Night Swing playing near to Hawk´s sax-character w. a lot of notes to a slow bluesy number with rhythmical freedom) up to the avant-garde work in the Quartet (1963 WHAS-TV) and in jam sessions with the "modernists" from the beginning in the early 40s at Mintons up to 1965 & `66 in Monterey and NPT.
