Do you listen to local radio? Chances are, you probably have one or more devices accessible to you in your car that allows you to listen to radio from all over the world. Satellite radio, streaming services like Pandora and Last.FM, Rhapsody, Spotify, and even your own music collection offer you an abundance of options in leu of hitting the FM/AM dial.

Local radio is hurting, and more radio stations are turning to the Web to find their audience every day.

What do you think? Is local radio dead?

  • I have to disagree Chris... Local radio is not "dead". It's in transition but it's isn't dead. The audience listening habits have changed, but Local radio does things Internet will never be able to do... LOCAL. Local Radio will have it's place always, it just isn't the sole media source as it once was.

  • I obviously listen to Internet Radio. I live in Mexico, the local radio... pretty much sucks. Bad music and bad Quality.

  • you can listen to local radio via internet

  • The flaw in your plan is the data carriers, AT&T don't offer unlimited tariffs any more, O2 removed unlimited data here in the UK, Vodaphone don't offer it. I pay £45 a month for 750 megs capped, A 64kbps stream accounts for 8kB a second, or 480kB a minute – almost 5MB every ten minutes. So, assuming I use my mobile phone’s data for NOTHING ELSE other than listening to the radio, I’ll get a thousand minutes – 16 hours of radio listening a month out of it over 3G before having to pay extra.

  • wtf you mean local radio. of course i listen to radio stations base in my country

  • I think we have another generation until radio starts really dying.

  • Its dead, if you hate advertisers. SkyFm.

Flash, Windows Media, other LIVE formats.

    For mobile XM is better.

  • You could argue the same for TV I suppose, but on-demand services are still some way off being the standard way of viewing, it will happen eventually but ISPs and cell providers really need better infrastructure to support high quality streaming for everyone, any time.

  • Music on the radio is crap but radio with conversations is still good.

My sister always listens to morning radio and I know my dad loves having the radio on.

So I wouldn't say its dead.

And not everyone owns a smartphone (I do though)

  • You bring up some solid points, but have only scratched the surface. I've written a post far too long to put in your comments with some more thoughts on this subject. I can't post the link here, but you'll find it on my Google profile if you click my name.

  • I don't even listen to Internet radio.
