Intelligence Squared and Google present one of the defining cultural events of 2012 -- the first-ever global debate on hip-hop: "Hip-Hop on Trial: Hip-Hop Doesn't Enhance Society, It Degrades It". The event takes place on Tuesday, 26 June 2012, at the Barbican Centre, London, and will also be live on Versus Google+ and Versus YouTube.

Akala, the artist from London, would have been absolutely perfect for this debate.

not sure how effective this debate can be without a working definition of hip-hop. as it stands hip-hop appears to be this massive ever-evolving untamed collective of concepts and perspectives that are harmonious at times and contradictory at others. as far as enhancing or degrading society goes hip-hop does neither in and of itself. its a neutral conceptual organism. the mind set and motives of the stakeholders are what degrades or enhances. narrow the scope on this... im just sayin.

Didn't get a chance to catch the debate--I literally just saw it come up on Twitter--but I'm curious to know the parameters of the debate ... Also, Hip-Hop is an American sub-culture born out of the "black experience" and those who contribute to it ... If Hip-Hop is on trial then America is the Co-Defendent ... This culture wasn't created in a vacuum ... I need to watch this shit ...

I would disagree quite strongly. The culture of hip hop is still alive and kicking you have to be present when the true essence of hip hop is taking place. I attend MC battles, beat battles, breakdancing events, poetry nights, live art, street-wear showcases and the community is a strong and positive one. A wide range of people can be seen at these events. What you are referring to is the BUSINESS side of the music industry. It does not represent Hip Hop Culture as a whole.
