Sport Unlimited is an inspirational programme designed to bring young people into a sporting environment. This three-year programme aims to involve 900,000 11-19 year olds from a semi-sporty background. The idea is to engage these individuals through a less formal approach - in a more relaxed, social and of course fun environment. We hope this will boost their skills and confidence and open up a sustainable sporting future. Funding for the scheme is provided from a national level but the direction and content is driven locally through the local knowledge of the Partnerships. Funding from Sport Unlimited has been used in a variety of ways: Creating sessions for young people to try something new Developing youth sections in clubs Funding new clubs A solid framework is in place to distribute projects throughout the county with a sport unlimited steering group of District coordinators organised by West Yorkshire Sport West Yorkshire delivered a pilot scheme in 2008 and we were given high targets to aspire to from the outset - but partners across the network have risen to the challenge and surpassed the Key Performance Indicators each term. Here in the West Yorkshire area we are looking to recruit over 13,500 participants each year this equates to 4,400 every term. We expect to help over 40,000 young people during the three years. To ensure success, we need to listen and understand what the young people want. Communication with those attending the activities is essential. Qualitative information gained through questionnaires and interviews have highlighted how more young people want to join sports clubs but have not had the opportunity. Sport Unlimited can create a behavioural change in young people by encouraging them to participate more regularly in out of school and community sport activities. Up to date West Yorkshire have reached an average of 85% retention of young people across all 900 activities delivered in a year. Sport Unlimited is directed towards the semi-sporty type who may have an interest in sport but might not be directly linked to a club in the community. Year 1 saw over 60 options of activity available - 85% retention To ensure this programme works effectively sustainability is essential. Exit routes are highlighted within the taster sessions to direct the young people to their local club, or alternative similar sports In all cases there is an answer and a pathway for young people to become more active within the community.
