Urban decay is among the most urgent problems in Hong Kong today. More than 3,000 blocks of building are considered sub-standard and 110,000 families are living in these homes. The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) was tasked by the Government to tackle this problem through redevelopment and rehabilitation a decade ago. Although tens of thousands of families have been benefited, urban renewal remains a controversial process. The balance between redevelopment and preservation, compensation, and the role of the Authority have been subjected to heated debate.
HKU Convocation (香港大學畢業生議會) has invited Mr Barry Cheung Chun-yuen 張震遠, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Urban Renewal Authority 市區重建局 to share with the audience the true stories behind the Authority's work, and its planned way forward to contain the urban decay problem as guided by the new Urban Renewal Strategy promulgated in February, 2011.
