Hundreds Protest UC Berkeley Republicans' racist bake sale: Students powerful chant. 9-27-11

revolutionbooks.org September 27, 2011. Hundreds of students protested the UC Republicans' racist "bake sale" with a die-in. At one pm they rose up and chanted.


In recent years, there has been a dramatic drop in the numbers of African-American and Latino students on campuses throughout the University of California system. This is a direct result of the attack on and ending of affirmative action; and of the significantly increased cost of tuition.

This change in the "complexion" of California's elite public universities coincides with more incidents of openly expressed racism. There has been a toxic, racist atmosphere growing on campuses.

On September 27, 2011 the campus Republicans at UC Berkeley staged a "bake sale" meant to ridicule affirmative action. This "humorous act" was, in fact. shockingly racist and ugly.

But what happened in response was beautiful.

At noon hundreds of other students dressed in black, filled Sproul Plaza. Simultaneously they raised their fists in the air for a moment and then they "died in" in for one hour, laying motionless in the hot sun.

At exactly one pm they rose up and chanted.

"It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love and protect each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains."

@ultromundoespossible Last time I checked, I have not met one black man that was sold into slavery, denied the right to vote and to education, and randomly stopped by the evil NYPD. The overrepresentation of minorities in prisons is due to one simple fact, minorities commit far more crimes. In 2007, black men were 8 times more likely to commit a homicide than a white man in the same age range.

@ultromundoespossible Living under such squalid conditions, how could someone of color not turn to things such as drug dealing to "survive"... right?

@ultromundoespossible Before you blame this on some vague perception of historical racism that existed before anyone alive today was born, let me remind you that black men are not even close to being 8 times more likely to "suffer" from poverty, and the average person "suffering" from poverty today owns a house, an automibile, a big screen television, and an xbox for the kids all courtesy of the taxpayers.

Affirmative action is fundamentally absurd. Undeserving students simply should not be admitted, because it is detrimental to the prestige and exclusivity of our schools. By letting these sub-par individuals in, it undermines the hard work and determination needed for stellar students to get in. If you truly are a brilliant student, then race should not be a factor.

Last time I checked it wasn't 2000 white people who are being randomly stopped and frisked by the NYPD daily. It wasn't white people who were sold into slavery, denied the right to vote and education including up til this day with the epidemic of mass incarceration of black and latinos. Black men have been admitted to prison at a rate 13 times higher than white men while this rate is out of proportion to their drug crimes.
