CSIRO's Chris Krishna-Pillay helped University of Tasmania's Virginia Andrews-Goff demonstrate how Virginia captures Weddell seals, anaesthetises them and attached a radio transmitter. Virginia, a zoologist studyimg the forgaing habits of Wendell seals in Antarctica, was one of four young scientists at the SCIENTISTS ON THE LOOSE gig (Hobart , state of Tasmania, Australia) on April 2, 2009. 500 high-schoolers watched while Jay Blanchard, an astrophysicist from Uni of Tasmania, held Chris down as Virginia described her seal straddling strategies. ABC Science is presenting the SCIENTISTS ON THE LOOSE series in three Australian states this year, with hosts including producer and science-broadcaster Tilly Boleyn, Chris KP from CSIRO, Bernie Hobbs from New Inventors, Ruben Meerman the Surfing Scientist from Rollercoaster and Simon Pampena the Maths-Comedian.
