Fans of retro computing will soon be able to buy a modern PC clad in a classic case.

Commodore is making a Windows PC that fits inside a boxy beige shell that looks exactly like its original C64.

The 8-bit machine was released in 1982, had 64 kilobytes of memory and became one of the best-selling computers ever.

Commodore's updated version will run Windows 7 but also has an emulator capable of playing games written for its ancestor.

Commodore has started taking orders for the C64x, priced at $595 (£364), and said the machines would ship between May and June. It is expected to appear in shops later in the year.

The machine's internal hardware will be based around a dual-core Intel Atom D525, a chip typically found in notebook computers.

Its 1.8Ghz chip is far faster than the 8-bit 1MHz MOS 6502 processor used in the 80's original.
California Games on C64 California Games was one of the most popular titles for the original Commodore 64

The C64x will also use an integrated Nvidia graphics chip and buyers have the option of equipping a model with a Bluray DVD player.

All the hardware for the machine fits inside the keyboard case.

The first models will sport the same taupe colour scheme as the original along with a "clicky" keyboard familiar to anyone who used the older C64 or its predecessor, the Vic 20.

    so nothing new, you silly.

You can even put your old C64 above your computer keyboard and you are almost "here"

Granted the hardware could use some modernizing. But the LOOK IS TIMELESS. Especially these days when PC's are usually shitty looking square boxes. I think its at least a duo core processor if I'm not mistaken. But damn it I love the look. I wish they'd get back to designs like these. PC's are like most cars these days, most tend to look very similar and lack originality.

  • @summer20105707 Huh? What's your point? I didn't even touch the tech specs. But you're definitely mistaken here: it isn't the electronics here that's expensive - it's cheapo commodity electronics that got cheap decades ago already, being sold in a ridiculously overpriced package. While I agree the VIC is pleasant to look at there's nothing that's been designed by C-USA (not even the logo) - it's just a cheapo keyboard PC made in China which only has analogue VGA for video output.

No Its got decent specs and has quite a few peripheral and USB connections. Even a Blu Ray player. I think this is a nice return to a CLASSIC design. Something thats been sadly lacking in recent years. The Vic 20 C64 keyboards were beautifully designed. All electronics are expensive at first but their prices eventually come down.

  • Will It Blend?

  • A SuperCPU @ 0.02 Ghz is amazing. Imagine a 6502 at 1.80 Ghz! *wants*

  • This is such a slap in the face to Commodore fans. Dicks.

  • A PC that LOOKS like C64 isn't a C64 - it's just a (overpriced) PC that looks like C64 :-/
