NASCAR may be the largest spectator sport in the region, but if youre looking for one of the wackiest races that benefits a good cause, check out the annual Gurney Tourney. This grown-up version of a soapbox derby uses good-old hospital gurneys. Sponsored teams run timed races, navigating their outrageously decorated gurneys down the streets of Richmond while participating in the tasks required at numerous obstacle stations. The event is a joint venture between the Hospital Hospitality House and the MCVH Auxiliary, in conjunction with the VCU Medical Center.
Virginia Commonwealth University and NBC-12 teamed up to create the series called "It's VCU" to showcase this urban university, located in the heart of Richmond. VCUs diverse students, faculty and programs, superior teaching, steady growth and groundbreaking research are shaping Richmond, the state and the region.
