Gurdain playing a DhereDhere Rela composed by Guru Pandit Shankar Ghosh.

A great mixture of dheredhere and dhenetage phrases increases the difficulty of the composition.

Followed by some improvisations and a Gat from the Lucknow Gharana

  • Hello Gurdain. This is an amazing clip. I would especially like to point out the dhera dhera. I'm still working on making that stroke better. Any tipis?

  • @marx99

    i need some tips myself

i have to say it is probably the hardest stroke to maintain

if you haven't practiced a while, it is usually the dheredhere that starts to show the evidence

best idea is to play small practice pieces using different types of the dheredhere that you have learnt

so any composition you have with dheredhere, try taking 4 beats of it with the dheredhere in and looping it at a slow tempo and speeding up until the quality goes down

  • Superb!!! Gurdain, I have been following tabla for the last 20 years. I learnt to some extent as well. Now I am in a different field. advertising. But Tabla is my inspiration. From my little knowledge I can see that you have a great carrier in front of you. I would like to see you play this bol. It's Pt.Samta Prasad's.

Dhera Dhera kitatak thathirigida Dhera Dhera Dhera kitatak thathirikitatak -Ulta

please correct if it is not complete. I heard it from an old recording.

  • @wannakuwatta69

yes that is correct - in single speed I have heard people play it like this

but when played double the last dhere dhere dhere becomes gere tere tere because it is physically illogical to go from the end of terekete (thirigida) to dhere as they use the same side of the hand

its the same reason we never play terekete terekete in normal style - we always have to change it to 3 finger style

  • Wah kya baat hai,

  • @gsingh93

not sure about professional, but as long as you practice because you are enjoying it and have patience to see improvements, then you will one day become much better. it is not always about speed or clarity, but making the tabla speak and give it your own personality - something i am trying to do. it is a never ending journey. practice a few hours a day if you can, but make it meaningful - play all the things you are struggling with but make sure you practice all kinds of compositions.

  • @utsavmohanlakhera

not enough! i practice too much on furniture

  • @misteratoz

for dheredhere I swing the palm so that the area under my thumb strikes the left side of the tabla and then the right side of my palm swings in to the right side of the tabla

the dhe portion is the right side of the palm and the re portion is from the left side of the palm

  • Excellent stuff1 Your strokes are very clear, and an inspiration. Thanks.

  • @wannakuwatta69 I've heard this bol before but never learnt it. I think the dhere dhere dhere is actually played gere tere tere when this composition is played in fast tempo.

  • love..........

  • how much u practise daily
